Washington, DC (WLTX/Department of Defense) -- Captain James E. Chaffin the Third, of West Columbia, died April 1st in Kandahar, Afghanistan, and the cause of his death is reported by the D.O.D. as a non-combat related incident.
The cause of Capt. Chaffin's death is currently under investigation.
A member of the 82nd Airborne, Capt. Chaffin was a fire support officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, and was deployed with the 2nd Battalion 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.
Captain Chaffin was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in May of 2009, from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. He was assigned to the Ft. Bragg HHC, 2nd BCT, 82nd Airborne Division & deployed to Iraq with his unit in May of 2011. He then transferred to 1st BCT in August of last year.
"We have suffered a great loss in the 3-319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment and express our deepest condolences. Capt. Edward Chaffin was an exceptional officer and absolutely value added to our team," said Lt. Col. Phillip G. Jenison, Chaffin's battalion commander. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We will never forget him."
"Capt. Chaffin was a great officer with an outstanding work ethic," said Lt. Col. Paul L. Larson, commander of 2nd Bn., 504th PIR, 1st BCT. "Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the Chaffin family during this time."
