Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- One state senator wants to help those cleared of legal charges who continue to deal with what happened online.
A proposed bill would require online mug shot sites to remove someone's mug shot for free once they send in a written request.
This would only apply to people who had charged dismissed or those who were found not guilty.
Senator Paul Thurmond says the bill would stop some companies who are using public information for profit.
"It really effects somebody who's been found not guilty or has had the charge dismissed, from being ultimately able to find employment, being able to get a good job. So in that circumstance I don't believe these private industries should take public information and extort individuals to their own gain," said Thurmond.
He says the bill would not apply to people who had charges reduced.
