CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.-- Military officials at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune are investigating a shooting that happened on the base Tuesday afternoon.

According to a news release, the shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. when a Marine standing guard at Camp Lejeune's Main Gate discharged an M4 rifle, killing another Marine guard.

Identification is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, officials said.

The Base Provost Marshal has stated the incident is being considered neither as an act of terrorism nor an active shooter event at this time.

The incident is currently under investigation by Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS).
