COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's top judge says her colleagues on the bench need more information when deciding whether to release someone on bond.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal told lawmakers during an annual address Wednesday that judges need to make sure that they have all pertinent information when making bond decisions.
Gov. Nikki Haley this week signed a bill requiring circuit court judges to get more information before deciding bond. Circuit court judges, not magistrates, would also hear more of those cases for people accused of serious crimes.
Toal also said efforts to cut court case backlogs and improve the judiciary's technology systems have been successful. This year, she has asked the Legislature for money to set up a disaster recovery system in case of emergency if the system goes down.
