Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- A man is charged with killing his brother-in-law and the attempted murder of his own sister after a Wednesday morning shooting.

It happened at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Brook Pines Apartment complex off Broad River Road in Richland County.

Some in the community said they were left fearing for their safety.

"I'm just surprised that it happened so close to me," said Caleb Miller, a 22-year-old resident of the apartments. "It's a weird thing to process."

Along with many of his neighbors, Miller awoke to a police chopper searching for the suspect in the shooting.

Miller said his own apartment is just a few doors down from where Richland County Deputies said a family dispute turned deadly.

"It's a weird thing to process."

Sgt. Curtis Wilson, a spokesman for the Richland County Sheriff's Department, said a husband and wife lived at the apartment where the shooting happened, and that it's the woman's brother who is the suspected shooter.

He's identified as 20-year-old Dexter Lamons Myers, and is charged with murder and attempted murder. Deputies said he shot his sister's husband in the chest and his sister in the lower body.

The reason why shots were fired is being determined.

"Kids is (sic) around here, and I feel like they should have had some respect," said Shelle Boyd, 20, also a resident of the apartments."The environment needs to change."

As crime scene tape was put up around the apartment where it all unfolded, Boyd says she saw a relative of the family struggling to come to terms with a loss.

"She was very said, she was hurt. I gave her a hug. I said my prayers go out to you and your family," Boyd said.

Boyd said she has a daughter and connects with what the family is going through.

"I felt their pain," she said, "don't nobody (sic) want to lose a loved one."

Deputies have not released the names of anyone else involved in the shooting.

Another person was taken into Sheriff's Department headquarters for questioning.

As of news time Wednesday, it was not clear at this point if deputies have released that person.
