Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- A suspect attempting to escape from a law enforcement drug task force ended up crashing into a tree near the Columbia Place Mall on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Richland County Sheriff spokesman Lt. Curtis Wilson, the incident started when the RCSD Drug Task Force witnessed a transaction taking place at the AM/PM Store off Parklane Road.
When deputies attempted to approach those involved, one suspect tried to escape capture, leading them on a short chase through the neighborhood behind the Columbia Place Mall, eventually losing control and striking a tree on Claudia Drive.
Emergency crews responded to the scene on Claudia Drive to attend to the wreck.
News 19 is currently at the location, and we are being told a total of three cars were involved in this incident, and one of the vehicles may have ended up perched in a tree. There was a Richland County Sheriff Deputy's patrol vehicle involved in the wreck. That deputy was not seriously injured, but was transported to an area hospital for observation.
No word at this time on the condition of those involved in the pursuit, or pending charges. As soon as this information and any other details become available, we will add it to this article.
