South Carolina's official "Southern Picnic Cuisine" was announced during a press conference on Wednesday
Senator Katrina Shealy officially announced barbecue as South Carolina's Southern Picnic Cuisine on Wednesday.
Officials say when looking for a common tie throughout our state, they found that no matter where you go in South Carolina, there are tons of barbecue places.
Those at the press conference says it's more than just a food, it's an important part of South Carolina's $18 billion dollar tourism industry.
"We have so many other things in South Carolina that are symbols and emblems, but barbecue is really important," said Senator Shealy. "So we wanted to make barbecue the official state something, so we made it a picnic cuisine and that's what it is! We thought it was very important and something that we needed to make official in South Carolina before somebody else nabbed it!"
To capitalize on South Carolina's barbecue, officials created the Barbecue Trail. The trail features a statewide map split by the four types of sauces and can be found on the official barbecue page.
