Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- According to the Richland County Sheriff, thieves have stolen 21 motorcycles from Richland County residents since the beginning of June, 2014.
Sheriff Leon Lott says eleven of the motorcycles were stolen from area apartment complexes, and often times they are stolen from apartment complexes or shopping centers, as well as poorly lit areas of parking lots, where they have been left unsecured.
It is recommended that motorcycle owners have alarms or GPS tracking systems installed, or an electronic immobilizer system approved by your insurance company. Along with one or more of these electronic devices, a strong chain and good lock are always advisable.
In addition, riders should be conscientious of where you park, and make sure your motorcycle is either parked in a garage, or parked in an area where it is clearly visible to passers by day or night, and the area is well-lit.
Also be sure to report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement, and always be alert and aware.
