Kershaw County, SC (WLTX) - Kershaw County deputies say a mom coming home from school with her children surprised a burglar inside her house.

Sheriff Jim Matthews says the incident happened Monday afternoon.

According to Matthews, the woman and her two children arrived home, and she took the children upstairs to watch television. When she got upstairs, though, she noticed a plastic bag with a makeshift ski mask lying on top of it.

Matthews says the woman got her two children and called her husband, who told her to leave the house. As she was leaving, deputies say she saw the suspect, 22-year-old Brent Allen Richardson, standing on her front porch. According to officers, Richardson told the woman that he was looking for his lost dog, then walked away.

The woman then drove a short distance away to wait for her husband, who had called deputies. Responding officers used bloodhounds to track down and arrest the suspect.

Matthews says his officers determined that the Richardson was hiding in the children's bedroom upstairs when the woman arrived, and jumped out of the window to get away. After the woman left the house with her kids, they believe Richardson came back inside the home and gathered up the items that he planned to steal.

Matthews says after he was arrested, the suspect admitted to being high on Xanax.

Bond for Richardson was set at $30,000.
