Richland County, SC (WLTX) - Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott revealed Thursday the newest instrument in his DNA lab to help solve cases.
Richland County is the first sheriff's department in the country to get the RapidHit 200 system up and running. The company gave it to the agency, meaning it did not cost taxpayer dollars.
Before this instrument, it took 24 hours to get DNA results, but now, it will now only take ninety minutes. Lott says the device has already helped solved crimes.
"We had a series of home burglaries in northeast Columbia," Lott said. "We had some DNA that we were able to get from the scene, quickly brought it in here, then in an hour and a half our lab doctors were able to say 'these break-ins are all connected, here's your subject, here's who it comes back to.' So it proved to be so valuable already."
Lott said this could allow the department to get results even while investigators are still working on the crime scene
