Columbia, SC -- Six of South Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities are finalists for The Home Depot's "Retool Your School" campus improvement grant.

The Grant program, in it's 5th year, works to help preserve and improve the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities. In total, more than $250,000 is awarded to 17 schools on three levels:

Tier I Grant awarded to 1 school for $50,000
Tier II Grant awarded to 13 schools for $10,000 each, and
Campus Pride Grant awarded to 3 schools for $25,000 each

The following South Carolina schools improvement projects are in the running for the 2014 Retool Your School Grants:

Allen University
Renovate a previously closed historic home on campus to be used as headquarters for Honors Program students

Benedict College
Build gateway to the new state-of-the-art cafeteria with pavers, landscaping and lighting

Claflin University
Upgrade the Gymnasium Exercise Room with new eco-friendly lighting, rubber floors and equipment

Morris College
Relocate, redesign and newly construct the one entrance to its campus

South Carolina State University
Build a state-of-the-art student center to include a recycling facility and health and fitness facility

Voorhees College
Construct a nature walk and bike trail around the campus

The Tier I and Tier II Grants are awarded on 50% Online Voting, and 50% Judges Evaluation.
The Campus Pride Grants are awarded on 80% Online Voting, and 20% Judges Evaluation of school's Social Media Campaign.
