Irmo, SC (WLTX) -- A Midlands educator has been named the president-elect of Magnet Schools of America.

Sara Wheeler was sworn in to her new role last week at the Magnet Schools of America's annual conference in Connecticut.

Wheeler is Lexington-Richland School District Five's magnet grant project director and oversees a $10.3 million federal grant the district received this school year to bolster its magnet programs.

Wheeler has 40 years of experience in the field of education and will serve a two-year term as M-S-A president-elect before becoming president of the group in 2016.
