ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - Some students and faculty members at Winthrop University say they were surprised to find out the school increased summer school tuition by 40 percent this year.

The Herald of Rock Hill reports (http://bit.ly/1u5mg9G ) that the tuition increase was posted on the school's website in March about three weeks before registration for summer classes began.

Winthrop President Jamie Comstock Williamson says she understand how the way the increase was handled bothered some people. She says in the future, Winthrop will announce summer school tuition increases at the same time it announces increases in fall and spring tuition rates.

Officials say the tuition hike means classes cost about $360 more this summer. Winthrop had about 2,000 students in summer school last year.
