Columbia, SC (WLTX) - SC Mission 2014, a free medical event, is now underway at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds.

SC Mission provides medical and eye care to patients who are uninsured or underserved. Hundreds of medical professionals from around the Midlands are coming to the site to volunteer their expertise.

UPDATE: Vision services have already filled up for Friday; those services will resume Saturday

The event runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on today, and from 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Some of the medical services that will be offered include diagnosis of acute and chronic medical conditions, well woman exams that include pap smears, as well as diagnostic education for diabetes, HIV testing, high blood pressure, and mammography.

The vision portion includes comprehensive eye care, examinations, and glasses.

People will be seen on a first come, first serve basis and the event is only open to people 17 and older. Registration will close when the maximum capacity is reached for each event, and organizers say attendees should decide ahead of time the order of what services they'd like to receive, since they might not be able to get all of them before the event ends.
