Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A University of South Carolina spokesperson has confirmed that bats have been sighted at it's School of Medicine campus.

The animals were seen at the facility located on Garners Ferry Road in Columbia beside the Dorn VA Medical Center.

School officials say the bats likely got in while the school was closed because of last week's winter storm.

The school is working with a wildlife remediation company to remove the bats, and the Department of Health and Environmental Control has been notified. DHEC confirms that it is working with the Centers for Disease control to investigate.

Access has been restricted for some parts of the building until the problem is fixed. The school has not received any reports of students being bitten by bats, but they're asking for people to immediately report any indoor sightings.
