Columbia, SC (WLTX) - South Carolina Electric and Gas crews have capped a gas line break in Columbia that led to the evacuation of a nearby school.

The four-inch rupture happened just before 9 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Christie Road and Galway Lane.

"A third party contractor dug into our line," explains SCE&G spokesperson Emily Brady. "We were able to get our crews on site very quickly, dig in, turn off the gas, and get this place secured."

Meadowfield Elementary, which is in that area, was evacuated as a precaution because it's downwind from the leak. Some people inside homes in the area also left their residences.

Galway had to be closed from Old Knight Parkway to Saye Cut Road. while crews responded.

SCE&G is working to permanently repair the line.
