Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia's Climate Protection Action Committee requested the city council to look at possibly funding a planning process for the South Assembly Street corridor and its surrounding neighborhoods on Tuesday.

Organizers say development is already coming to the area, but a funding plan would allow them to facilitate that process and point it in the right direction.

"We would be working with Richland County as well to have a joint process because parts of these areas are in the city, parts are in the county, and we would hire a consultant to help us have a public participation process to see what needs are, what the goals and the visions are and then develop recommendations," said Director of Planning and Development Services Krista Hampton.

If the city council decides to fund the study, Hampton says public hearings will be held to ensure they get the visions from both the residential and business community.
