Authorities say Breibart, who plead guilty ot mail fraud extorted more than $1 million from clients.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A high-profile South Carolina attorney is facing time in prison on allegations of extorting $1 million from his clients.
Lexington lawyer Richard Breibart faces up to 20 years in federal prison and $250,000 in fines when he's sentenced Wednesday, but prosecutors have agreed to recommend a lower sentence. In court documents filed last week, Breibart's attorneys say he is sick, destitute and shouldn't receive any prison time.
Breibart pleaded guilty last year to mail fraud. Prosecutors said Breibart told clients they were facing penalties or criminal charges unless they put hundreds of thousands of dollars into his law firm's trust account.
Authorities say Breibart then took the money and used it to pay for unspecified personal and business expenses.
