Almost a month after a winter storm devastated the Midlands. Trinity AME Church is constantly reminded of the damage.

"Our ministries are still continuing, we're not going to stop them just because of this," Sherri Scott said.

Within Trinity AME Church, Sherri Scott can trace her family lineage pretty far back.

"Probably the oldest person would be Grandma Mandy, that would be my mother's great grandmother," Scott said.

On Sundays, Scott can be found at the church on Green Tree Road. But, after last month's harsh ice storm, the roof of the church caved in, causing severe damage to the sanctuary.

"To a certain extent it's still a hurtful feeling not to be in the church that you've been coming to all your life, but then again you realize the church is just a building," she said.

Now, Scott and the members worship in Silverstreet at a community center. And they've been anticipating getting back into the church they call home. But, this Sunday brought uncertainties.

"Deacon said this morning he's not even sure whether the insurance may cover it or not," she said.

Until their insurance agency finishes the investigation, members can't even salvage what's left. So, in the mean time they've started the Nehemiah Restoration fund to bring in donations from the public.

The name is quite significant.

"When you talk about Nehemiah he was sad because the walls of Jerusalem were torn down. So, he prayed and God came through," Scott said.

Right now Trinity AME is in limbo, but Scott has a bright outlook.

"The church is in your heart so you still got a community that has reached out to you and that loves you and you still have members that the feeling of love is still there. We're still OK," she said.

For the rest of March, services will continue at the Silverstreet Community Center on Main Street.

If you would like to help Trinity AME get back on their feet, you can send donations to:

The Nehemiah Restoration Fund
PO Box 112
Silverstreet, SC 29145

Checks can be made payable to Trinity AME Church.
