Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The grandnephew of Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins has died from injuries sustained in crash that state troopers say is DUI-related.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts confirmed that 3-year-old Josiah Caden Jenkins passed away Tuesday morning.

"I would like to thank everyone that has offered their support and prayers for Josiah and our family during the last four days and ask that you keep our family in your prayers today and in the days to come as we grieve the loss of such a wonderful boy who was taken from this world at such a young age," Chief Jenkins said in a statement.

Josiah Jenkins and his mother were hurt in a crash that took place Friday night on North Springs Road in Richland County. Chief Jenkins says his relatives were on their way to get pizza when the collision happened.

According to the highway patrol, Jenkins' mother was driving down the road when her car was hit by a vehicle driven by 43-year-old Lonnie Gross. Both the mother and Jenkins were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Gross was originally charged with felony DUI with great bodily injury, but those charges have now been upgrade to felony DUI resulting in death. Gross was denied bond.

A SLED records check shows Gross has had four convictions on DUI charges. He also was charged with DUI last November.

Here is Aubrey Jenkins' full statement:
