Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia Police Department Chief candidate Tony Fisher has withdrawn from the chief race.

Fisher, the retired Spartanburg County Public Safety Chief, notified City Manager Teresa Wilson Wednesday morning.

Earlier this week Wilson told News 19 that her search was down to three candidates but did not specify who those candidates were.

Wilson hopes to name a new chief sometime next week.

Below is Fisher's email to the city manager:

March 12, 2014

Ms. Teresa Wilson

City Manager

1737 Main Street

Columbia, S. C. 29201

Dear Ms. Wilson:

After much consideration, I withdraw my name as a candidate for the Chief of Police for the City of Columbia. I would like to think the Citizens who served on the search committee and worked assiduously to recommend the best candidates for the city of Columbia. Also to all the citizens who sat for hours during the arduous task of interviewing each candidate, thank you. And to city staff much success in your efforts in selecting the next Police Chief.

Thanks for the opportunity to participate.

Sincerely,

A. Tony Fisher
