Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Sources tell News 19 that William Holbrook, the current police chief in Huntington, West Virginia was in town Friday as the top candidate for the Columbia Police chief job.

City officials have not confirmed who the top candidate is, but City Manager Teresa Wilson hopes to name the new chief next week.

Wilson says that her top candidate met with State Law Enforcement Division chief Mark Keel, Lexington Sheriff James Metts and other agencies earlier Friday.

She says she is confident that the candidate will be dedicated and will stay in the city long term.

"He really has moved a community forward from a law enforcement perspective. He has been in some similar positions that we are in now, where there may have been a lack of leadership and he really turned the law enforcement agency around to be nationally recognized," said Wilson.

Columbia has been without a permanent chief since Randy Scott stepped down last April. Ruben Santiago had been serving as interim chief until he resigned Thursday afternoon.
