Columbia, SC (WLTX) - South Carolina has the sixth lowest rate of unemployment for veterans.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released their latest numbers Thursday, showing the rate stands at 4.1 percent. That's down from the 6.9 percent it was two years ago.

"This is an extremely positive step," said Cheryl M. Stanton, executive director of the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce(SCDEW). "It's the result of hard work and dedication by a lot of people, state agencies and other public and private organizations coming together to make South Carolina the most military-friendly state in the nation."

South Carolina and Gov. Nikki Haley recently launched a program called Operation Palmetto Employment, an initiative designed to help servicemembers find good careers in the civilian side.

SCDEW says they offer many resources to veterans who need help finding a job. People can go to dew.sc.gov or operationpalmettoemployment.sc.gov for more information.
