SCHP fined a driver for an unsecure sofa that came off the back of a truck causing an accident between two buses.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol tells News19 they've fined a driver for an unsecure sofa that came off the back of their truck causing an accident between two charter buses.
Lance Cpl David Jones said around 9 a.m.on Saturday, a sofa in the middle of I-20 East caused a charter bus to swerve. Another bus behind it also swerved to miss the couch. That's when it rear-ended the bus in front.
The 2nd bus was carrying members of USC's Beta Theta Pi fraternity and their guests. Troopers say eight people were hospitalized. According to director of communications for the fraternity, Martin Cobb, these fraternity members went to the hospital for stitches and x-rays.
Jones said troopers found the truck while directing traffic into the Carolina Cup. The driver had a seat cushion that matched the sofa found in the road.
Jones said that the driver will be named at fault for the accident, not the bus drivers. He also said if you have large objects in your truck or on top of your car, be sure to have them securely fastened.
