Springdale, SC (WLTX) - Springdale police now believe a woman made up a claim that she was sexually assaulted by someone pretending to be a cop last year.

Chief Kevin Cornett announced the update on the case Thursday afternoon.

Last October, a woman claimed a man stopped her on Wattling Road while pretending to be a police officer. She told According to the woman, the suspect's vehicle had a blue light on his dash board, was driving a dark vehicle, and wore a shirt that said "police" on it.

The woman said the man beat her, forced her into the woods, then sexually assaulted her.

But Cornett says during the investigation, they found inconsistencies in the woman's story. Cornett says at this point, it's not been decided if the woman will face charges.
