Races Underway At Lake Murray Regatta
Lexington, SC (WLTX) - Easter weekend means a very big weekend for the waters of Lake Murray. Just shy of it's 50th anniversary, competition in the J24 Easter Regatta started Friday.
"The regatta has been going on for almost 50 years," said Charles Bumgardner, a past chairman of the regatta. "It started with many people from the northern part of our country wanting to come and sail."
This year 35 boats will compete in the Regatta. In years past, as many as 50 boats have raced.
In addition to the J24 boats that have raced easter weekend, this year J20 boats, a different type of sail boat, will take the waters too.
"They like to come down, dust their boats and get the snow off their boats and sail. The group that came down from Canada said this is the first time they've sailed since September," Bumgardner said. "It attracts some of the top sailors in the nation, especially in that J24 class."
This year, current and past North American champions are in the race. They'll have to compete alongside a past world champion whose also in the race.
"Certainly it's nice to see the boats. They're pretty and everything like that. Again the sailors come out and impact the local community through their purchases at stores and with local caterers," Bumgardner said. "Once we open our doors to these sailors, they're happy to come and enjoy southern hospitality."
