Richland County, SC (WLTX) - Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says one of his officers shot a suspect who tried to run him over during a traffic stop Tuesday morning.
Lott updated reporters on the incident at a noon press conference.
According to Lott, the incident began when an anonymous tipster reported that someone was selling drugs on Battleford Drive, which is just off Broad River Road. Lott says he have the case to his drug suppression team to investigate.
Around 11 a.m., Lott says officers spotted the suspect's vehicle at the intersection of Marley Road and Broad River, a short distance away from Battleford. He says they tried to stop the vehicle, and got out of their car to speak to the suspect. At that point, Lott says the suspect attempted to run over one of his deputies, and the officer responded by firing at the suspect's car.
The deputy was not injured.
Lott says the suspect was hit at least once in the arm. The vehicle continued driving, however, and Lott says the suspect threw drugs out of the car as he crossed Broad River on Marley, eventually winding up on Menlo Drive. At that point, officers were able to stop the suspect and take him into custody.
In all, three officers were involved in the incident: two uniformed deputies and one who was undercover.
Lott says officers searched the suspect's apartment, and say they found a gun, marijuana , and three juvenile suspects inside. The name of the suspect has not yet been released.
