Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Annual Jefferson Jackson Dinner was held at the Convention Center and the motto was "When Governors Govern."
The event was headlined by US Senator Tim Kaine from Virginia.
The Democratic Party honored former South Carolina Governor Dick Riley. We spoke with the lone democratic congressman in our state, Jim Clyburn and he talked about the affordable care act and our economy.
"All of those people who said the affordable care act would never work, they have all been made liars, it is working, over 8 million people have signed up," said Clyburn.
"When the economy is bad in South Carolina we hear the governor blame it on Obama, now the economy is booming and she is taking the credit. Well, you can't have it both ways, it is the Obama policies that's doing it for South Carolina as well as the nation."
We also spoke with Senator Vincent Sheheen who is running for Governor against the current Governor Nikki Haley.
"We need to have leadership that we can trust in South Carolina and that's accountable to the public, we have to rebuild the roads and bridges of this state and we also need a governor who is focused on public education again," said Sheheen.
This was also the first convention for new party chair Jamie Harrison; he is one of the youngest party chairs in the country and the first African American Chair for our state.
"Our theme tonight is when governors govern and it's so fitting for where we are in South Carolina right now, we need a governor and a government that is honest and accountable and respects the people of South Carolina," said Harrison.
WLTX will be also covering the Silver Elephant Dinner and SC GOP convention in June.
