Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews has been named the 2014 South Carolina Sheriff of the Year.
The South Carolina Sheriff's Associated announced Thursday that Matthews received the award.
Matthews was nominated for the award by Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, who praised Matthews for improving response time, increasing DUI enforcement, and offering greater accessibility to deputies to the public. He also got several endorsements from leaders in the Kershaw County community.
Matthews has served as Kershaw County Sheriff since 2011, but also has a long career in law enforcement working at the Drug Enforcement Agency and multiple police departments and sheriff's offices in South Carolina.
Matthews will receive his award at a ceremony in Myrtle Beach in July.
