Clyburn Compares State Leader to LA Clippers Owner
Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Congressman Jim Clyburn (D-South Carolina) compared state Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom to L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling for comments he made about SC State University earlier this year.
Eckstrom made the remarks during a Budget and Control Board meeting about the school's finances. He said students who go to SC State can't go to other schools because they couldn't afford it.
Many state lawmakers and SC State University Alumni, including Clyburn, called the comments inappropriate.
"Eckstrom sounds just like that Los Angeles Clippers guy to me," Clyburn said. "Now see, that's the mind set that too many people in high places have."
Late Wednesday, Eckstrom said he had not spoken to Clyburn since he made the comments.
He called a comparison to Sterling "sad and disgusting."
CAMPAIGN HEATING UP:
At the media event, Clyburn says among issues like the Affordable Care Act and road infrastructure bank, he and his party have voted in the best interest of the county.
Those topics will come up during the congressional campaign he says.
It's estimated the infrastructure bank is about to run out and South Carolina has voted against medicaid expansion under the ACA.
"We may be losing elections today, but we continue doing the right thing," Clyburn said. "It'll all work out. We may not win the next election, but we'll start winning again because people will come to their senses. Well I'm happy with the people we have. I'm not happy that we don't have more. I think we have some high quality candidates. I wish we had more."
