The lowest unemployment rate in the state is Lexington and Saluda Counties.

Saluda, SC (WLTX)- It's often very noisy on Main Street in Saluda County, not because of people walking to thriving shops, but because of trucks passing through town.

"Roughly 50 percent of folks work outside of the county," said Saluda County Council Chairman Donald Hancock.

Saluda and Lexington Counties tied for the lowest unemployment rate in our state. According to the South Carolina Department of Employment Workforce, that rate is 3.9 percent. South Carolina's unemployment rate stands at 5.3 percent, the lowest in almost 13 years.

"Saluda County is one of the top five producers of agriculture products in the state. But the other reason is Saluda County is located geographically within an hours drive of larger labor markets," said Hancock.

Those other counties include Greenwood, Newberry, Lexington, Richalnd and Aiken. Even though the unemployment rate is low, folks are not necessarily working in the county.

" I don't think it is a bad thing people are driving less than an hour to get to work, but at the same time we would like to provide more employment for our citizens that live in the county and we are working to do that through the Department of cCmmerce," said Hancock. "We are trying to market Saluda County as a place to bring businesses."
