Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Defense attorneys rested late Tuesday in the trial against the parents of Robert Guinyard Junior.

Courtney Thompson and Robert Guinyard Sr. are both charged with homicide by child abuse and unlawful neglect of a child.

Guinyard Jr. died on July 1st of last year. The night he died, incident reports say deputies found Robert face down and unresponsive. An autopsy concluded there was a history of abuse against the child.

Thompson admitted to the jury Tuesday that she starved her son at one point. She told the jury she only gave him water for four days and gave him only water and bread for four more. Robert's mother also admitted to using a cable cord to beat him at one point. However, she maintains that she did not kill her son.

Robert Antonio says he often had to protect his son from his mother. He testified Tuesday that he did not use a white pole that's been entered into evidence to beat his son.
