Irmo, SC (WLTX)- The Irmo Community Park remains closed Monday afternoon following a deadly accident over the weekend.

Park officials say a toddler was struck by a falling tree branch while playing on the playground during a church picnic.

"Kids running around having a good time and a branch broke loose and struck a small child in the head," said Whitt Cline, Director of Public Services at Irmo Park.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says 3-year-old Jacoby Latta of Irmo died from complications of a head injury.

Cline who is also a certified arborist, spent the afternoon surveying the tree to make sure it doesn't need to be removed.

"We go through every month and inspect them. We look up in the canopy and see it any damaged limbs or dead branches you need to get rid of them it is very important," said Cline.

Cline says safety is their number one concern.

"Safety is a top priority and we have a very safe park, this is just a tragic accident."
