Irmo, SC (WLTX) – Two weeks ago a Richland- Lexington District Five bus driver was picking up students on his morning route when he saw a fire at an apartment and saved the day.
Parents and District officials are calling Chris Blackwell a hero.
Blackwell has been a bus driver for Richland Lexington Five for five years and two weeks ago while picking up students from school; he noticed his kids weren't at their bus stop.
The students were crowded around one apartment building and a student said there was a fire.
Blackwell instantly grabbed his fire extinguisher from his bus ran into the apartment to see the stove and cabinets in flames. He was able to put out the fire before firefighters got on the scene.
He says he used the fire training that he learned while on the job.
"I know these guys on my bus they are with me morning and afternoon, so I try to treat them as my kids. So when I saw they were in trouble I tried to do what I could do and trust that someone would do the same for my kids," said Blackwell.
Fire officials say if it wasn't for Blackwell the apartment could have been fully engulfed by the time they arrived.
