Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Democratic gubernatorial candidate Senator Vincent Sheheen has introduced a plan he believes will help veterans in our state.
Sheheen and House Representative James Smith plan to introduce changes to the budget that would open DHEC clinics to veterans after hours and on the weekend.
They also want to provide no-interest loans to disabled veterans whose benefits are tied up due to backlogs with the Veterans Administration.
Sheheen is also calling for the acceptance of federal tax dollars to expand Medicaid for South Carolina veterans as well.
"What we're trying to do is throw a lifeline to those veterans who might not be getting the services that they need, and that would be the state government stepping up to the plate at least for the next few months until the federal government, the VA can get its act together and provide that lifeline themselves," said Sheheen.
Sheheen says some of his plan could begin soon if it is included in the budget lawmakers hope to pass this week.
