Newberry, SC (WLTX) - The City of Newberry is getting a new police chief next month.

City officials announced Tuesday that they've appointed Dennis Brown to take over the department on July 2nd.

"Chief Brown is a young, energetic and experienced law enforcement professional who comes to Newberry with over nine years' experience as a police chief," City Manager Al Harvey said in a statement. "He is progressive in his thinking and considers community policing as a critical element of a police department.

Brown succeeds Jackie Swindler, who retired after 38 years with the city.

Brown had been serving as the police chief in Folly Beach. He's also been a chief in North Carolina, Vermont, and Maine.

He'll take the oath of office at 9 a.m. at City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
