Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The Salvation Army of the Midlands says they are in urgent need of food donations.

Summer is when they traditionally see a dip in contributions, but they still have mouths to feed.

Just about anything can help.

"It's extremely important," said Seth Taylor with the Midlands Salvation Army. 'Feeding people who are hungry is a basic need."

The food shelves there were nearly bare Wednesday evening, and they need your help to fill them.

"I would say it's an urgent need to fill the food pantry so that we're able to continue meeting human needs," Taylor said.

Once each month, about 150 families come to their food pantry, Taylor said. But summer months can present a problem because people are away from their homes vacationing, but also because kids are out of school.

"Kids get the free breakfast and lunch at school, and now that it's summer time, the children are out for summer, and so we anticipate seeing an increase in the need for food," Taylor said.

One item they say they are running low on is baby food.

"Things like canned meats, canned vegetables, diapers, canned fruits; anything that they could give to help the less fortunate, we would very much appreciate," said Taylor.

They said the shelves were moderately stocked a bit after they went and bought groceries themselves Wednesday.

"These donations will only last a few days, and by Monday, we'll be getting bear again," Taylor said.

Donations can be dropped off at the Salvation Army at 3024 Farrow Road in Columbia between 10 a.m and 4 p.m. M-F.
