Newberry, SC (WLTX) -A two year long drug investigation culminated in a major drug operation Thursday morning in Newberry.

Newberry Sheriff Lee Foster says officers obtained more than 100 arrest warrants on 45 suspects were obtained. Investigators say the suspects were involved with various drugs, including crack cocaine, heroin, and meth.

Officers say they've seen a recent rise in heroin use. They say it's become popular as a backup for people who can no longer illegally obtain prescription drugs.

"There must be a public understanding that the sell and use of drugs effects our communities," said Foster. "Much of this investigation came from complaints for citizens who want safe, drug free communities and law enforcement in Newberry County has committed to be partners to make our communities great, safe places to live."

In addition to this operation, a concurrent operation was taking place to combat the battle against meth. Twenty people were arrested and charged with attempting to possess a controlled substance for attempting to illegally obtain Sudafed to make meth.

The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected.
