Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Republican lieutenant governor candidate Pat McKinney has dropped out of the race for the job, ending a possible chance to be in a runoff later this month.
He made the decision to end his campaign Thursday afternoon.
In Tuesday's GOP primary, McKinney finished second in unofficial results to Henry McMaster. He also received 1,185 more votes than Mike Campbell, the third-place finisher. If those results stood up following a mandatory recount and Friday's certification of the vote, McKinney would have faced McMaster in a runoff on June 24th.
With his departure from the race, McMaster and Campbell will now meet in that primary.
McKinney's campaign manager told the Associated Press the retired real-estate developer is ready to be a full-time husband, father and grandfather again.
