Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) - There is more bad news for South Carolina State University after they were notified Thursday that they have been placed on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

For the past year South Carolina State University was under a warning by the accreditation body and to add insult to injury, the university has now been placed under probation for financial and governance issues.

"I want to let every parent know, every parent know, that this probation will not affect the university, it will not affect our academic offerings and it will not affect the value of the degree," said President Thomas Elzey.

It's been a rough first year for President Elzey, from a student being killed on campus to a board of trustee member shakeup, a federal investigation and a 13 million dollar debt.

Now the university is faced with probation, he says it will take time to get the university back on its feet.

"I would like to see us move ahead, but the reality of it is, the damage that has been done are issues that are cumulative issues that have occurred many years ago. To drop from a 4,800 enrollment to a 3,400 enrollment occurred over the years, it takes time to rebuild that. "

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools have not notified the University of the specifics of the probation.

Elzey says he knows that positive change must happen quickly because he'd hate to see the university go away if it loses accreditation.

"We are looking at about four to five million dollars in cuts to the budget we are also looking at fee and tuition increases to balance the budget"

The board of trustees will vote to pass a balanced budget Friday.

President Elzey says that they will be notified on the specifics of the probation next month.

The probation will last for two years.
