Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A group of kids from Columbia spent the day on the farm with the USC Equestrian Team, learning how to ride and take care of horses.

"Some of them had been on horses before but several of them had not been on horses before or even seen horses before," said Boo Major, USC Equestrian Team Coach. "It's a great opportunity to expose young kids to the world of horses."

The City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department runs the camp.

Each Friday, campers team up with a different athletic team from USC.

"It also exposes children who maybe have never had an opportunity to be around a horse," Major said. "It gives them an opportunity to be up close and personal with a horse and be out in the country for the day."

Despite the heat Friday, the Equestrian Team showed off some of their skills and then taught the campers how to ride like the pros.

"It's hot and the flies are flying around. We've got several really timid children here today and it's really fun to watch them come out of their shell around the horses," Major said.

Campers also had a little fun with the horses. They used finger paint to draw on the horses and then used what they'd learned about horse care, to clean up the horses.

"We certainly want to promote the sport of equestrian at USC and within the community in Columbia," Major said. "We know these young kids are going to go home and talk about seeing the horses today and maybe some that didn't even know there was equestrian at the University of South Carolina."
