Richland County, SC (WLTX) - Authorities have arrested a man after they say he attempted to elude a deputy at a traffic stop Saturday morning.

Derrick Sumter, 36, has been charged with failure to stop for blue lights and siren, reckless driving, and unlawful carry of a pistol.

Deputies say he was arrested shortly before 3:00 a.m. at Clemson Road and Summit Parkway.

Sheriff Leon Lott says that a deputy on patrol noticed Sumter driving a motorcycle in a "reckless manner and traveling at a high rate of speed."

He says the deputy initiated a traffic stop on Clemson Road and Sumter tried to elude the deputy.

Officials says Sumter lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into a mailbox Curvewood Road and Summit Terrace Court.

He was transported to Providence North East Hospital with non life threatening injuries to his lower body.

Deputies say Sumter did not have a concealed weapons permit for a handgun found in his possession.

He is currently being held at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
