Columbia, SC (WLTX)- SCE&G is warning customers to be aware of scam artists posing as employees of their company.
The utility says the scammers are calling businesses and individuals and telling them that they're either late on their bill or need a new meter.
The individuals then request that customers purchase a payment card from a local convenience or drug store and then call back with the card's information for immediate bill payment.
Important tips to keep in mind:
- When SCE&G employees call concerning an unpaid bill, they identify themselves.
- SCE&G does not ask customers to purchase payment cards from local convenience or drug stores for bill payment purposes.
- If someone believes they have been a victim of this scam, call SCE&G's customer service department
People who think they are the victim of a scam should notify law enforcement. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs also has a phone line for reporting consumer scams: 1- 800-922-1594.
