Columbia, SC (WLTX)- While it appears to be all clear on I-20 near the Alpine Road exit and I-77 interchange, South Carolina Department of Transportation crews say the work isn't complete just yet.

"It was one of the most congested portions of the interstate in the Columbia area and probably throughout the state," said Robbie Isgett, District One Construction Engineer.

Drivers traveling east or west bound on I-20 near the Clemson Road area will notice a dramatic difference.

"We pushed the contractor to get the project complete before the July 4th holiday and now they have to come back in and do some clean up," said Isgett.

Lance Corporal David Jones with the South Carolina Highway Patrol urges drivers to slow down when traveling through the construction zone.

"The lanes are open but the speed limit still remains at 55 through this area," said Jones.

Jones says the fine in a work zone can go from $81 dollars to several hundred dollars if workers are present.

The widening project on I-20 was started in October of 2012 and is expected to be complete on August 15th.

There is also a road widening project underway on I-26 from the I-77 interchange to the Old Sandy Run exit. That project is expected to be complete next summer.
