Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that began in between two vacant businesses in Irmo on Wednesday.

Witnesses called in the fire shortly before 1 p.m. saying they saw smoke and turned around to see a small fire around a tire and tree outside the buildings. Within minutes, the fire spread to the tree and building.

Firefighters from the Irmo Fire District, city of a Columbia and Lexington County were able to get the fire under control.

Irmo Fire Marshal Jeff Allen says they're investigating the fire and have not determined if it's suspicious.

Allen says the businesses inside the buildings became vacant around January and the building is currently for sale.

One of the buildings sustained minor damage inside and outside, the other is in good condition. No one was inside during the fire and there were no injuries.
