Winnsboro, SC (WLTX) -- A memorial was held Wednesday evening in Winnsboro for a woman who was found dead at her home on July Fourth.

Balloons, cards, stuffed animals were placed at the door of the home where investigators said Jennifer Stone, 34, was murdered. Stone leaves behind five boys who are mourning the loss of their mother.

"I have to keep my head up, that's all I can say," Angela McDaniel, who described herself as a longtime friend of Stone's said Wednesday at the vigil.

Stone was found strangled outside of her home on Garden street last Friday when public safety officers responded to a home on S. Garden Street at approximately 4 a.m.

Public Safety officers say when they arrived, Stone's 18-year-old son led them to the body of Jennifer Monique Stone.

"You could have did (sic) anything else, but kill her. she's a friendly person. you can get the shirt of her back," McDaniel said.

According to the Winnsboro Department of Public Safety, Stone was unresponsive on the side of the house. Stone's son informed officers that 36-year-old LaTroy Dante Sampson assaulted him earlier that evening, but that he was able to get away from him.

Investigators are asking for the community's assistance in locating a man they believe strangled her.

"This guy is almost like a ghost, because we haven't had anyone to say that they've seen him since the day of the actual murder," Winnsboro Public Safety Chief Freddie Lorick said. Lorick said his department has followed dozens of tips and leads but, so far, have turned up nothing.

Records from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division show a rap-sheet that includes armed robbery and a narcotics charge.

At the vigil, Stone's family turned down News19's invitations to speak on camera saying they feared repercussions.

Arrest warrants for assault and murder has been filed for Sampson.

Officers say Sampson should be considered extremely dangerous.
