Sumter County, Sc (WLTX) - Sumter County Officers say a routine property check led to an on foot pursuit and one arrest.

Saquan Tarkee Jarvis, 30, has been charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon, simple possession of marijuana and possession of a stolen handgun.

The incident occurred Tuesday at approximately 6 a.m. on South Pike Road while an officer was performing property checks.

Officials say the officer approached Jarvis who was sleeping on a table near a restaurant. The officer identified himself and asked for ID, startling Jarvis who then reached for a loaded gun near a backpack beside him. They say he then ran off across the U.S. 76/378 Bypass.

Police found Jarvis a little over thirty minutes later in a wooded area near two apartment complexes.

Officers say the backpack Jarvis left behind contained a small amount of marijuana, multiple cell phones, a variety of tools, keys, hearing aids, a silver ring, and a black mask and jacket and a pair of leather gloves.

A handgun was also recovered by K-9 officers.

Jarvis is being held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center pending bond.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sumter County Police Department.
