A Columbia neighborhood says they've been waiting for two years to have their community pool fixed, and help may be just around the corner.

"I feel the heat now and I know these young kids when they go outside they feel it, too," Greenview resident James Williams said.

With temperatures reaching the 90s, it's nice to take a dip in your neighborhood pool.

But, the residents of Greenview don't have that option.

"It's not just Greenview. It's not fair that they have to go all the way to Drew or Maxcy Gregg to swim," Williams said.

Greenview Park's pool has been dry the last two summers.

"We were still kind of muddling through and trying to make it all work and continue to patch the liner and it reached a point to where we could no longer patch it adequately," Columbia Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Caton said. "That's when the decision was made that we just need to close the pool until we can determine how we want to move forward with it."

Caton said there are big plans in the works for major renovations.

"We're going to have people from all over the city of Columbia and the surrounding area that want to use it, it's got a component in it that meets families, small children with a zero-depth entry facility with some aquatic play units in place, we've also satisfied our competition swimmers with a lap pool. And then we've got an area I think the teenagers are going to really enjoy and that's where we've got some waterslides that are built in," Caton said.

Caton said the $3.2 million project has an aggressive timeline and is scheduled to be completed by next July.

"I'll have confidence when I see this completed. That's when I'll believe," Williams said.

Tuesday morning at 10 the Columbia City Council has a work session to discuss the proposal and get it approved.

If it's approved News19 was told the City has already set aside $2 million to get the project off the ground.
