West Columbia, SC (WLTX) - West Columbia voters will get a chance to choose whether they'll have a strong mayor this fall.
The town council voted Thursday 6-3 to allow a special election to determine the city's form of government. If approved, the mayor would have much more authority over town decisions, becoming the chief administrator for the town.
It comes as the council and the Mayor Joe Owens continue a contentious battle over authority in the Lexington County town. In April, the council voted to take away the mayor's authority to preside over meetings. Owens disagreed with the move, and gathered about 1,600 signatures on a petition calling for a vote on a strong mayor system of government.
The election is set to take place on September 30th.
