Bishopville, SC (WLTX) - There's an effort underway to save nearly three dozen dogs from certain death in Lee County.

The animals will be euthanized Monday if no one steps up to adopt them from the Lee County Animal Shelter.

"In my office alone we have about 15-20 animals and there shouldn't be any animals in my office," said Doris Winstead.

Winstead has worked at the Lee County Animal Shelter since it opened 20 years ago. They usually house about 50 animals a month, but this week alone they've doubled in size.

"We've taken in more than 60 animals this week; I'm use to maybe 60 a month, not 60 a week."

They have 95 dogs and 40 cats. Winstead says county council has done a good job of providing enough food for the animals but they simply can't house them all.

And if they don't find homes for them soon, close to 30 will be euthanized; something that's quite emotional for her.

"It's something that we don't want to do. But it is not fair for the animals to stay in cages. They deserve homes; this is the part of my job that I don't like. But its something you have to do from time to time."

And she says she doesn't see the problem getting any better with two dogs getting ready to have puppies over the weekend.

Volunteers have already taken close to 30 cats and dogs to their homes. Winstead is now asking for those who are willing to foster a dog or adopt one.

"They need to go to responsible homes, if someone wants to foster them for a couple of weeks we could use fosters."

Even if you don't foster or adopt a cat or dog, Winstead has one message to pet owners in Lee County.

"Stop breeding, spay and neuter your pets, if you want a puppy, come see me."

If you would like to foster or adopt a dog you can call Doris at (803) 428-2077 or you can visit the shelter which is at 101 Animal Shelter Road, Bishopville, SC.
